Senator Singleton's Response to Advocacy Emails from the LRHSD Community

Thank you for contacting me with your opposition regarding school funding for your district. As the State Senator of the 7th Legislative District, I share your concerns.

I was extremely disappointed to learn that several school districts in our legislative district had a drastic reduction in funding in the Governor’s budget proposal. However, it is important to note that the Governor’s budget is just that - a proposal, as it must go through the legislative approval process by July 1st.

Last year, many districts across the state and several here in Burlington County faced reductions in state aid and I proudly co-sponsored a supplemental aid bill to provide additional resources. I have been active and engaged again this year to help support and deliver funding to our schools.

To that end, I have undertaken several efforts to begin to address the reductions in state aid to our local school districts.

  • First, upon learning of the decreases in state aid, we immediately reached out to the NJ Department of Education to determine the rationale and causation of those reductions.
  • Next, I have contacted the Office of Legislative Services to request an analysis of potential changes to the school funding formula, and how that could create more equity for our school districts.  I introduced that legislation this week. This is a proposal that would bring more parity, without increases to local property taxes for this school year. Read more about this here:
  • Additionally, my office has contacted each of the impacted school districts to get a clear picture of how these funding cuts will negatively impact school programming, educational delivery, faculty, and most importantly, students.
  • I am also personally meeting with all of the LD7 impacted Superintendents by the end of this week.
  • Lastly, I have met with the NJDOE Acting Commissioner to discuss the impacts that these decreases will have on our school districts, and what we can do collectively to curtail those negative impacts. The Commissioner made it clear that an overhaul of the school funding formula is needed going forward.

I would encourage parents and faculty to continue to voice their concerns. I will continue to advocate for our schools as well.

Again, thank you for contacting me on this important matter.

Most sincerely,

Hon. Troy Singleton
Senator, 7th Legislative District
