2nd MP Literary Letter Dates and Guidelines

English I Level I

A literary letter is a double effective tool.  It allows you to practice your writing while simultaneously engaging in deep reading. Each letter provides a space for you to reflect on what you have read, ask probing questions, examine literature and literary style, and communicate with other active readers.

The Plan

You will be writing letters to your assigned writing buddy. For each marking period, you will need to write a total of 2 letters: 1 based on your independent reading selection and 1 based on our class reading. Each letter is worth 50 points. The letter must be typed and follow MLA format.  On the day it is due, you will switch literary letters with your writing buddy and be required to respond to his or her letter with a one day turnaround. Each response is worth 25 points.

Guidelines

Your letters should follow a letter format with the date, body and salutation.

Your letters should be detailed (at least THREE weighty paragraphs!) and insightful.

Every letter must include the title and author of the text.

Be sure to address at least ONE of the following in each letter:

- Characteristics of the author's style include (i.e. literary devices, structure, etc.) and the effects of these devices are...

The protagonist has changed/developed over the course of the novel in that...

- Similarities/differences between me and one of the main characters are...

You have to read this book because...

A quote that I find interesting/intriguing is...

An idea/aspect of the book I am struggling with is...

A question I have is...

I see a connection between the author's life and the novel in...

There is a lot of pressure placed on the main character, including...

Schedule

   Marking Period 2 Due Dates:

  • Wednesday, December 11th - To Kill a Mockingbird will be the focus. - All essay submissions are due by 7:30am with a printed copy in hand for class that day.

Responses

You will write 2 responses per marking period.  1 response for every letter written by your writing buddy. The format for a response is specific feedback that goes over what the writer did well, where the writer could improve, and where you suggest some alternatives that could have strengthened the literary letter.  If room permits, the response can also include questions for the letter's author.
