Setup & Password Recovery Guide for Students

Microsoft Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR)

1. Enrollment Requirement

All LRHSD students must complete the SSPR enrollment process. You are not automatically enrolled, and skipping setup now will result in repeated prompts at every login until it is complete. Enrolling in advance is the only way to reset your own password without assistance.

2. Initial Setup

One of these methods needs to be selected to continue. Follow these steps to configure your account recovery options:

Step 1: Open the Security Portal: Go to Microsoft My Sign-Ins

Step 2: Sign-In: Use your full LRHSD student email address and current password. You will see the following prompt to continue securing your account. Click Next.

This is image of the Next button mentioned in the step 2.

Step 3: Add Recovery Methods: Click Other Options to select a method that will meet your own needs.

This is an image of the Install Microsoft Authenticator mentioned in step 3.

It is suggested students use either phone or email as their method for password reset. You will need to configure at least one of the following methods:

  • Email: Select “Email” and enter a personal email address (Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, etc.). Do not use your school email address.
  • Mobile Phone: Select “Phone,” enter your mobile number, and choose text message or voice call.
  • Mobile App Notification: Select “Microsoft Authenticator app” or another authenticator app. You will receive a push notification to approve when resetting your password.
  • Mobile App Code: Select “Microsoft Authenticator app” and choose the verification code option. You will enter the 6-digit code shown in the app.

Step 4: Verify Each Method: Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm each method you add (e.g., enter the code sent to your phone or approve the app notification).

⚠️  Important: Email Recovery Address

If you use email as a recovery method, it MUST be a personal account (Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, etc.). Do not enter your school email address here. If you lock yourself out and your only recovery email is your school account, you will be unable to recover access on your own.

3. Resetting Your Password

If you forget your password or get locked out, follow these steps:

Step 1: Go to the Reset Portal: Navigate to Microsoft Online Password Reset. You can also go to Microsoft Account, click Sign-in, enter your school email, and select Forgot my password.

Step 2: Enter Your Email & CAPTCHA: Type your full school email address and complete the CAPTCHA.

Step 3: Verify Your Identity: Select a recovery method (app notification, app code, email, or text/call) based on what you enrolled. Follow the prompts to verify.

Step 4: Create a New Password: Enter a new password that meets the schools’s requirements (minimum length, numbers, and uppercase letters). Type it a second time to confirm.

Step 5: Done: Click Reset password. Your new password will work immediately across all Microsoft services (Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, etc.).

4. Troubleshooting

Wrong account: Make sure you are signing in with your LRHSD school email. Personal Microsoft accounts (@outlook.com, @hotmail.com) will not work.

Browser issues: If you run into loading errors or redirect loops, open a Private or Incognito window (Ctrl+Shift+N on Windows, Cmd+Shift+N on Mac) and try again.

Outdated contact info: If your phone number or personal email address changes, update it in your security profile before you get locked out, not after.

Need Help?

If you cannot verify your identity through SSPR or are still locked out after trying, contact your school’s Media Specialist.
