BOE Student Representative Monthly Report

Lenape High School

Lenape’s fall play, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, debuted on November 20th and ran for three nights. Many students were featured in various roles from Charlie to the choir. It was a feat of student unity with organization of theater, stage crew, and marketing.  The play became an event that many students, staff, and parents attended. To continue Mary Jane Mullen’s legacy of spreading cheer and love, Lenape hosted its second annual “Live Like Mary Jane Day” on Friday, November 21st, which is two days before her birthday. Staff wore their themed shirts and wrote notes to others to share gratitude. On November 26th, an electives fair was held in the North Cafeteria where underclassmen could learn about the courses they are interested in taking in the next upcoming school years. Tables were staffed by students and featured games, information sessions and snacks to motivate excitement and interest for a variety of classes.

Cherokee High School

Cherokee's Girls' Soccer team topped Central Regional to win the NJSIAA Group 4 South Sectional Championship. It was a total team win for the Chiefs to deliver their first sectional title in program history. For the third straight year, both the Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country teams won the South Jersey Group 4 sectional title. Sophomore Jack Tindall impressively became one of the only sophomores ever to win an individual state title in cross country. Cherokee Upstanders took part in the 19th annual ADL Youth Leadership Conference. Cherokee students engaged with students from different high schools, focusing on friendship and inclusion.

Shawnee High School

Shawnee’s Yellow Ribbon Club participated in “Wreaths of Remembrance” at the Gloucester County Veterans Cemetery on December 6th. Over 4,000 wreaths were placed on graves of veterans. This event was a special way during the holiday season to remember and honor those who served. The Girls' Soccer team won the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 3 Championship. They advanced all the way to the NJSIAA State Group Final. Congratulations, girls!  AP Government students went on a field trip to Washington, DC where they got a tour of the House of Representatives and Senate thanks to Senator Andy Kim’s staff. They were also able to walk around the Washington Mall and learn many facts about the early US government.

Seneca High School

Seneca wrapped up their food drive at the end of last month, donating over 50 bags of canned and non-perishable goods to those in need in our community. Students donated items and stayed after school to assist in this event to help families during the holidays. The fall blood drive was held in late November, accumulating more than 50 donors. Student Council did a great job organizing, running, as well as setting up and cleaning up this event, ultimately being one of their biggest of the year. Seneca’s Multicultural Club and French Club came together to share a special Friendsgiving meal, celebrating cultures from around the world. Students prepared dishes that highlighted their unique backgrounds and family traditions. The room filled with new flavors, laughter, and stories as everyone introduced their foods and the meaning behind them. It was a vibrant celebration of diversity, community, and connection.

Cherokee eSports Team Wins State Championship

Cherokee Principal Donna Charlesworth and Assistant Principal Kevin Meder were on hand to introduce members of Cherokee's state championship eSports team: Senior Sam Rendino, Junior Ryan Robinson, Junior Angelo Garay and their coach Technology Teacher Adam Parker. Back in November, Cherokee won their second straight Garden State eSports Championship in the game Super Smash Bros.

Cherokee High School's Unified Robotics Program

Cherokee Principal Donna Charlesworth and Technology Teacher Shaniqua Brown introduced Alexa Butler, Piya Dattani, Jake Leff, Joyce Li, Rudra Patel, Veer Patel, Ryan Robinson and Risha Shukla to the Board of Education. The students then gave a presentation about Cherokee's Unified Robotics program, which is a team-based robotics program where special education students collaborate to design, build, and program LEGO robots. Cherokee was supported by a grant, which enabled the purchase of robot kits and paraprofessional assistance and it was the first school in the Mid-Atlantic region to pilot this type of program.

The Cherokee Robotics team also collaborated with the Kingsway Learning Center in Voorhees as they began implementing the Go Baby Go program, which introduces children with disabilities to mobility devices. The team worked on integrating modified controls, supportive seating and easy-to-activate switches to four ride-on toy vehicles.
