Governor Murphy, Senate President Nicholas Scutari and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin, Senator Gopal, Senator Turner, Senator Sarlo, Senator O'Scanlon, Senator Zwicker, Senator Bucco, Assemblywoman Swain, Assemblywoman Pintor Marin, Assemblyman Wimberly, Assemblywoman Lampitt and Assemblyman Stanley,
As a (parent, resident, business owner) and VOTER of (insert community) and proud New Jersey citizen, I am writing to you with a sense of urgency regarding the recent devastating reduction in school funding for the 2024-2025 school year in the Lenape Regional High School District (LRHSD). I am requesting that restorative funding be included in Governor Murphy's final approved budget with the goal to fully cover the proposed cut to state aid.
For seven consecutive years, the LRHSD, along with around 200 other districts, has witnessed our local taxpayers' dollars being redirected to over 400 different school districts in NJ due to Senate Bill S2. The S2 reductions were mandated to be gradual, to allow districts time to make incremental cuts to yearly budgets, but the LRHSD is now facing an unexpected and substantial reduction in state aid of $4.69 million, almost 14 times more than what was mandated by Senate Bill S2!
I urge you to swiftly address this funding crisis by fully reinstating our state aid. It’s imperative that this is done as soon as possible, in time for school districts to finalize their budgets in April. There will be cuts even if some or all of the state aid is returned to us, but those cuts will be less severe if districts like LRHSD receive restoration.
Our state’s exceptional public schools are a point of pride and build strong communities. As a state, we have made the choice to invest in our children, in our future and theirs. The future of every New Jersey child cannot and should not wait. I look forward to your immediate action.
Sincerely,
