Locating Print Resources:

 To search for books on the online catalog:

Basic Search:

To find background information about your topic:

  1. From the Media Center Website
  2. Select “Find a Book, CD or Video” on the left hand side of the screen. Hit Enter.
  3. Make sure the “Basic” tab is highlighted.
  4. In the Subject space, type your broad topic. Click the SUBJECT button to start the search.

          OR

Power Search:

To find information supporting your topic:

  1. From the catalog screen, select the “Power” tab.
  2. On the first line, select “Subject” from the drop down menu. Then type in your broad topic.
  3. Make sure the “AND” radio button is selected.
  4. On the second line, select “Subject” from the drop down menu. Then type in your narrowed search term.
  5. On the “Location” line, select either “Shawnee” or “All High Schools.”Click Search.

Locating Accredited Websites:

From the Media Center Website

1.      Select “Subject” on the left hand side of the screen. 

2.      Scroll down and select “Social Studies”

3.      Scroll down to the “Government/Politics” section.

4.      Use the websites are highlighted in yellow! 

Locating Accredited Articles in Databases:

Encyclopedia Britannica Online

Includes the complete Britannica encyclopedia.  Britannica will give you a thorough background on your topic. 

  1. Go to the Media Center’s website
  2. Click on Databases
  3. Select “Britannica Online
  4. Type your search term in the search box
  5. Locate and evaluate the articles retrieved from your search. 

Britannica Online Database Search Tips:

  1. Use the articles in the blue column.  They are high school/adult level.
  2. Use the “Table of Contents” to find your information quickly.
  3. Use the “Web’s Best Sites” column to find accredited websites pertaining to the topic you are searching.
  4. Use Ctrl + F to locate specific information in your article.  Remember it only searches the page you are on!

EBSCOhost:  Student Research Center

This database includes information from Magazines, Newspapers, Books & Encyclopedias, Biographies, Radio & TV News Transcripts, Country Reports, State/Province Reports, Primary Source Documents, Photos/Maps/Flags, Film & Video, etc.

  1. Go to the Media Center’s website
  2. Click on Databases
  3. Select “EBSCohost
  4. Select “Student Research Center
  5. Type your search term in the search box

OR

            Use the Advance Search by linking search terms

            Example:  Human Cloning AND Ethics             

  1. Locate and evaluate the articles retrieved from your search 

EBSCOhost: Student Research Center Database Search Tips:

  1. Use the “Filter Results By” tabs at the top of the screen to select what format you prefer.  Example:  Magazines, Primary Source Documents, etc.
  2. Use the “Narrow Results by Subject” (narrowed by different search terms) to make your search more focused.  
  3. Use Ctrl + F to locate specific information in your article.  Remember it only searches the page you are on!

EBSCOhost: Points of View

This database includes information on controversial issues.  Both sides of the issue are presented.  The information included is in one of the following formats:  Points of View, Newspapers, Periodicals, Books, Biographies, Primary Source Documents, Images, etc.

EBSCOhost:  Points of View Database Search Tips:

  1. Use the tabs at the top of the screen to select what format you prefer.  Example:  Periodicals, Primary Source Documents, etc.
  2. Use the “Research Guides” on the right side of the articles. 
  3. Use Ctrl + F to locate specific information in your article.  Remember it only searches the page you are on!

EBSCOhost: EBSCOhost Web

This large database pulls information from over 20 smaller databases.  You need to select which database is the best pertaining to your topic.  The MAS Ultra – School Edition database is the general one. 

EBSCOhost:  EBSCOhost Web Database Search Tips:

  1. Keyword Search – Select “Full Text” and “Peer Reviewed”
  2. Subject Search – Select Explore “Subdivisions” 
  3. Use the “Visual Search”
  4. Use the “Narrow Results by Subject” (narrowed by different search terms) to make your search more focused. 
  5. Use Ctrl + F to locate specific information in your article.  Remember it only searches the page you are on!
