Best of District

  • Best of District entries compete against entries from all four district high schools. There will be only one winner for each category: Technical Achievement, News Package, News Coverage, Original Series, Promo, Sports Announcer, Sideline Reporter, Short Film/Movie, and Documentary.

    Unless otherwise noted, all entries should be submitted by the producer(s) ONLY.

    TECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENT - (maximum 2 minutes)

    For outstanding achievement in the technical aspects of television production. This category may include individual crafts such as videography, animation, graphic design, editing, music arrangement or composition, scenic design, audio reproduction, lighting, special effects, etc.

    Entry must be followed by a video narrative (maximum 5 minutes) from the producer. This portion of the entry must include b-roll and a voice over (must be the producer’s actual voice). The producer needs to describe how their Technical Achievement entry was created.

    For example: 

    • What software was used?
    • Was a template used?
    • How was a particular effect achieved?
    • What was their inspiration?
    • Was it created using school or personal equipment and software?


    Entries will be judged on the basis of concept and content, with emphasis on creativity and execution.  The following criteria will be used:

    • Creativity
    • Content
    • Overall effectiveness and execution
    • Video narrative
    • Concept

    NEWS PACKAGE - (maximum 3 minutes)

    The winners from the four Best of School News Package awards will compete in this category. Entry must be a package reporting on a single event or activity in the areas of either athletics, academics, extra-curricular or community service.

     

    The following criteria will be used:

    • Informative presentation of event or activity
    • Audio levels are even and clear
    • Clean, effective editing
    • Appropriate appearance of guest/talent on camera
    • Overall presentation


    NEWS COVERAGE

    News Coverage will be judged on the 10 news packages that are submitted from September through March.

    The following criteria will be used for each News Package:

    • Informative presentation of event or activity
    • Framing, lighting, and overall look of video
    • Clean, effective editing
    • Appropriate appearance of all on-camera talent and/or interviewees
    • Audio levels are even and clear


    ORIGINAL SERIES 
    – (maximum 6 minutes entry)

    The entry for this category must be submitted as 3 separate unedited segments from 3 of the minimum 5 episodes in the series. Each of the 3 episodes must be identified at the beginning by a basic five second graphic noting the name of the episode.

    The following criteria will be used:

    • Camera technique, set-up and shots
    • Quality of audio (dialogue, natural sound, sound effects, music, etc.)
    • Appropriate use of sets/locations (lighting, backdrop)
    • Clean, effective editing
    • Graphics contribute to presentation (title sequence, credits, etc.)
    • Overall presentation

     

    PROMO

    This category will be judged on the 3 promos (each 1 minute maximum) that are submitted from September through the LDTV Awards deadline.

    The following criteria will be used:

    • Informative description of event or activity
    • Quality of audio and video
    • Graphics contribute to effectiveness of promo
    • Clean, effective editing
    • Overall presentation


    SPORTS ANNOUNCER

    Only student announcers that have worked with LDTV Sports during the current school year are eligible for this category. These students are automatically entered in this category and do not need to submit an entry.

    The following criteria will be used:

    • Informative and professional announcing skills
    • Appropriate camera presence of announcer
    • Knowledge of game, event, athletes and coaches
    • Overall presentation



    SIDELINE REPORTER

    Only student sideline reporters that have worked with LDTV Sports during the current school year are eligible for this category. These students are automatically entered in this category and do not need to submit an entry.

    The following criteria will be used:

    • Informative and professional sideline reporting skills
    • Appropriate camera presence of sideline reporter
    • Knowledge of game, event, athletes and coaches
    • Overall presentation

     

    SHORT FILM/MOVIE – (minimum 3 minutes – maximum 5 minutes entry)

    A work with a script and actors that tells a story.

    The following criteria will be used:

    • Camera technique, set-up and shots
    • Quality of audio (dialogue, narration, natural sound, sound effects, music, etc.)
    • Appropriate use of sets/locations (lighting, backdrop)
    • Clean, effective editing
    • Graphics contribute to presentation (title sequence, credits, etc.)
    • Story is effectively presented
    • Overall presentation



    DOCUMENTARY – (minimum 3 minutes – maximum 5 minutes entry)

    A work presenting political, social, or historical subject matter in a factual and informative manner and often consisting of actual news clips or interviews, accompanied by narration.

    The following criteria will be used:

    • Camera technique, set-up and shots
    • Quality of audio (natural sound, sound effects, music, narration, etc.)
    • Appropriate use of staging area (lighting, backdrop)
    • Clean, effective editing
    • Graphics contribute to presentation (titles, lower thirds, credits, etc.)
    • Message is effectively presented
    • Documentary demonstrates a thorough amount of research
    • Overall presentation
