• LRHSD Science Laboratory Initiative

Authentic laboratory experience is a critical component in preparing our students for post-secondary success in the sciences.  The goal is for our students to have extensive opportunity to “do” science – follow experimental protocol and/or design experiments, collect real data, and thoughtfully write an analysis of the data and a summary of what it all means.

The state of New Jersey will be implementing new standards that emphasize concept/principle based instruction.  Specifically, the Core Course Curriculum Standards for Science states that science instruction must:

    • Be Laboratory-based and Student-centered
    • Focus on how students interpret, analyze and construct arguments for their findings and proposed explanations
    • Give priority to evidence
    • Evaluate findings and formulate explanations
    • Emphasize authentic assessment, with reporting to a target audience
    • Highlight understanding and application of concepts rather than “covering” material

Please visit http://www.nj.gov/education/aps/cccs/science/ for the new standards.

Lab Science is a Practice, not a Place!

All students, regardless of course or level, are expected to perform authentic laboratory experiments as part of their science instruction.  Additionally, all students will be preparing lab reports as follows:

    Environmental Earth:

    Level 1 & 2: Data analysis skills 1st semester/2 formal labs

                Level 3 & 4: Data analysis skills 1st semester/1 formal lab

    Biology:

    Level 1 & 2: Review of skills/3 formal labs/1 narrative lab

                Level 3 & 4: Review of skills/2 formal labs/1 narrative lab

    Physical Science:

Level 3:  Review of skills/2 formal labs/1 narrative lab

    Science Skills/Integrated Science:

Level 4:  Data analysis skills 1st semester/1 formal lab

    All Upper-Level Courses (Biology/Chemistry/Physics/Genetics/Astronomy):

Level 1:  One formal lab per marking period and two narrative labs

Level 2:  One formal lab per marking period and one narrative lab

    All Upper-Level Courses (Chemistry/Physics):

Level 3:  Two formal labs and one narrative lab
