Physical Education and Health Course Descriptions :SPORTS MEDICINEDesigned to allow college prep students to learn about sports medicine, human anatomy and physiology, and various allied health professions. It is geared toward providing the students with a strong knowledge base and hands-on skills in the area of sports medicine. Any student considering advancing their education in biology, pre-med, or related sports medicine/ allied health should make this course part of their high school educational experience.Grade 9 - HEALTH EDUCATION IIncludes family living, responsible decision making, character education, and physical, social, and mental growth and development. The course also includes knowledge about the effects of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco on the individual, family, and society. In addition, current newsworthy issues, including AIDS, are examined with respect to their impact on the individual, the family and society.Grade 10 - HEALTH EDUCATION II/Drivers Education and Traffic SafetyCovers New Jersey State Motor Vehicle laws with emphasis on defensive driving and seat belt safety. The course also includes the effects of drugs and alcohol on driving performance.Grade 11 - HEALTH EDUCATION III/Health & ScienceCovers basic first-aid knowledge and emergency first-aid techniques, including CPR for infants, children, and adults. It also focuses on basic nutrition and physical fitness concepts. There is an emphasis on the impact of positive fitness and nutrition decisions, while illustrating the negative impact that drugs, alcohol, and tobacco will have on the student’s well being.Grade 12 - HEALTH EDUCATION IV/Family Life EducationA study of the various stages of life between birth and death. The course also integrates problems associated with substance abuse and their effects on family living, marriage, finances, pregnancy, parenting, quality of life, and life expectancy. AIDS and other health problems are reviewed with respect to their impact on the individual, the family, and society. All state mandates are met in the four-year health program.HEALTH EDUCATION I, II, III, IV (Level 5)Designed to address the needs of classified students. Over the span of four years, the course includes topics such as family living, responsible decision-making, character education, and physical, social, and mental growth and development. This course also includes the examination of the effects of drugs and alcohol on the individual and society. It covers first aid, basic nutrition, physical fitness concepts, and the study of stages of life as well as basic driver’s education. Physical EducationPHYSICAL EDUCATION I, II, III, IVEmphasizes physical fitness and the importance of developing/maintaining lifetime physical fitness habits. Portions of the courses stress the development of teamwork, trust, cooperation, leadership, and problem solving skills, as well as, building self esteem and self-confidence. Additionally, physical education activities emphasize skill development and knowledge of individual sports, team sports, leisure time and rhythmic activities through a structured four year program. Physical fitness tests are administered in the beginning of each semester. Should students’ test scores fall below an acceptable level in any of the areas of fitness, they will be given an opportunity to develop a level of competence in the deficient area.SKILL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIESInclude Basketball, Volleyball, Dance , Rock Climbing, Football, Track and Field, Kickball, Obstacle Course , Outdoor Problem Solving, Frisbee, Softball, Soccer, Badminton, Pickle Ball, Jump Rope, Tennis, Micro-Pong, Mile Run, Sit-Ups, Sit and Reach , Pull-Ups, and Wellness/Weight room.
